It’s no secret that tax season can be a stressful time for anyone who works in wealth management. JMG takes a unique approach to this busy period by providing creative outlets that help the team weather the season successfully.

For example, Ed Raffenetti came up with the idea of creating “WJMG,” an in-house radio station that plays music over the public-address system. Employees can make requests for songs and participate in live trivia games.

“Tax season can be strenuous,” he says. “Everyone appreciates a little levity and being able to take a break from time to time.”

The firm is also known for nurturing employees, giving them the tools to learn, grow and succeed, whether they want to become advisors or accept other roles.

“Management values the employees,” Ed says. “We frequently meet with them and talk about their career paths and advancement. We discuss what they need to do each day, as well as how they can improve.”

Prospective employees should be detail-oriented, have good customer service skills and be technically proficient, he says. Being in a service-based business, JMG works hard to build long-term relationships with clients.

“We provide a high level of client service, and we expect everyone to contribute to that culture,” Ed says.

If your passion is financial planning, you won’t find a better employer than JMG, says Josh Kowalczyk.

“You’re going to get the best education you can here, and they’re going to make sure you understand everything,” he says. “They invest in you to help you become the best employee you can be.”

Josh joined JMG as a financial planning associate after he received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural and consumer economics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. While JMG wasn’t the only employer he considered, he appreciated the firm’s fee-only, client-focused approach and has never looked back.

“We get to use all the skills we learned in college, and there’s a personal level of working with clients that you don’t always get in finance,” he says. “I know people in my graduating class who are working at firms where they have to be involved in sales. That’s not for everyone.”

JMG’s open-door management style also appealed to Josh. The firm keeps all employees in the loop about what’s happening with the business.

“We all work hard but still have time for some fun,” he says. “It’s nice to have a group of people who you can enjoy working with and learning from.”

Ambition is the key that will open the door to a successful career at JMG, says Donna Smolich.

“Our employees who do their jobs well and take the initiative to go above and beyond what’s expected thrive,” she says. “The opportunities here are endless for prospective employees who are willing to do that.”

Helping others without being asked – even if the work isn’t in their job descriptions – is a fundamental part of JMG’s culture, Donna says.

JMG has grown significantly since Donna joined the firm, adding employees and offices, but has maintained a friendly, family-like atmosphere.

“We’re different from other firms in how we treat our employees,” she says. “We go out of our way to make their time here as enjoyable as we can while getting the work done.”

Donna joined JMG as a receptionist and served in positions of increasing responsibility. She’s had the opportunity to see the business from many aspects and has always considered it her “home.”

“I’ve never felt a need to look elsewhere for ‘better’ opportunities because I’ve always been able to find them here,” she says.
